USES AND BENEFITS:
•
Cottonseed fatty acid content helps to provide oxidative stability to the oil.
• The
presence of tocopherol (vitamin E) in Cottonseed oil also contributes to its
stability by inhibiting the development of rancidity.
• Its
high smoke point is suitable for frying and cooking processes.
•
Cottonseed oil is used in cosmetic and skin care products due to its high fatty
acid content, as well as phytosterols and tocopherols which have antioxidant
and anti-inflammatory properties.
• The
linoleate content in Cottonseed helps to improve the skin barrier function and
increase skin hydration.
• This
oil can be used as an alternative material for making environmentally friendly
biodegradable soaps and films.
• Several
studies have shown that Cottonseed oil has potential in preventing heart
disease by lowering total cholesterol and LDL levels.
• In the
cooking oil industry, Cottonseed oil is commonly used for cooking oil and
margarine raw materials [10,11,12,13,14].

DESCRIPTION:
Cottonseed
oil can be extracted from the seeds of the cotton plant of various species,
mainly Gossypium hirsutum and Gossypium herbaceum. Our Cottonseed Carrier Oil
is a vegetable oil extracted from the seeds of the Gossypium herbaceum cotton
plant which is processed using the cold pressed method without high heat or
chemical solvents. The resulting oil is a slightly thick liquid with a neutral
and mild aroma, pale yellow to bright yellow in color, this oil is rich in
linoleic, palmitic, and oleic acids. Significant levels of vitamin E and other
antioxidants can improve skin health, improve skin appearance, moisturize dry
skin, and help prevent premature aging [1,2,3,4].
BOTANICAL
OVERVIEW:
Gossypium
herbaceum L., known as Indian cotton or Levant cotton, is an annual to biennial
shrub native to South Asia and Africa. This plant grows 1 to 2 meters tall,
with woody stems covered with simple or stellate (star-shaped) fine hairs. The
leaves are palmately lobed with 5–7 lobes, the leaf base is cordate
(heart-shaped), the upper surface of the leaf is generally glabrescent (almost
hairless), while the lower surface is pubescent with stellate hairs. G.
herbaceum flowers appear singly in the leaf axils, with pale yellow corollas
and dark red bases, measuring about 2.5–4 cm. The epicalyx (additional calyx)
consists of 3–5 large segments that resemble true petals, functioning to
protect the flowers and ovaries. The fruit is an ovoid capsule, measuring about
2.5–3 cm, which when ripe will open to release seeds covered by long white
fibers (lint) and short gray hairs called fuzz. These seeds are the main source
of cottonseed oil and textile fibers. These morphological characteristics are
important in the selection of superior varieties, both for the needs of the
textile industry and for pharmaceutical and cosmetic purposes based on
vegetable oils [5,6,7].
HISTORY:
Cottonseed
oil (Gossypium herbaceum) has a long history that began in the late 19th
century in the United States. Originally considered a waste product of cotton
production, cottonseeds were first used economically in the 1890s by cotton
farmers in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Previously, cottonseeds were dumped into
rivers by cotton gins, but it was later discovered that cottonseeds had the
potential to be a valuable source of oil.
Initially,
cottonseeds were crushed using animal or water power to extract the oil.
However, over time, the cottonseed oil processing industry grew rapidly. The
first cottonseed oil mill in Arkansas, the Arkansas Cotton Oil Co., was
established.
Cottonseed
oil production is not only limited to human consumption, but is also used in
the manufacture of soap, fertilizer, animal feed, and cellulose fibers for
textile products such as rayon and nylon. In 1977, Planters Cotton Oil Mill,
Inc. was founded in Pine Bluff as a cottonseed oil processing facility, and in
1998, the company acquired Cargill's Whole Cottonseed division, expanding its
market reach to several states across the United States.
Over
time, cottonseed oil has undergone several innovations in its production
process. In the late 19th century, David Wesson, a chemist, developed a
deodorization process to remove the odor and color of cottonseed oil, making it
more acceptable in the marketplace. This process allowed for the production of
a cleaner, more stable cottonseed oil, which was later used in the manufacture
of products such as Crisco, a popular animal fat substitute in the early 20th
century. Today, cottonseed oil is used in a variety of industrial and consumer
applications, although its production has declined since the mid-20th century.
However, with increasing awareness of health and sustainability, cottonseed oil
is gaining attention again as a healthier and more environmentally friendly
alternative to vegetable oils[8,9].
